Starred Items: The Do it Already Edition

Sun PointI’m a week into The Artist’s Way with a fabulous group of ladies. We meet every Friday at a sweet little coffee house down the road.

I did my morning pages every day, took myself on an artist date to Michael’s for some window (and not-so-window) shopping for brushes.

And I found myself back at my visual journal. I missed it so much, but didn’t realize it until I was back painting and stamping and writing and drawing…

It’s been a while since I did my weekly link roundup, so here’s a quick sampling of what’s been making my brain buzz lately:

Da Linkz

You only get paid what you think you’re worth: I love Dave. In a very plantonic way of course, but he hits where it hurts (but where it’s needed). I’m in the process of re-evaluating all my services and businesses and stuff and figuring out what to do, and pricing is at the very top of it all.

The Vocation Myth: Sometimes I think that if I found that one thing that I knew I was destined to do and I did it, that life would be all rainbows and unicorns. Then I realize that it’s a worthless pursuit. Mainly because the finding takes away so much energy from the doing. And it’s in the doing that you find. Right? Besides, who said you have to have only ONE thing?

Are you your own dream zapper?: If there’s one thing that I’ve learned in the past few years is that I’m my own worst enemy. Chances are, if you’re trying to make a change and haven’t yet, you’re zapping your own dreams. Ash outlines the five biggest excuses you use to discourage yourself from chasing after your dreams.

So what’s been tickling your neurons? Leave a comment with the post that made you think the most this week.

Have a lovely weekend! I’m off to see my Artist Way gals and drink some coffee…

Starred Items: My Week in Review

:)Happy Friday!

How’s your week been?

Mine’s been nuts.

I’m starting up an Artist’s Way group with a friend of mine July 9 and we met on Monday to discuss the particulars. If you’re around Cobb County, GA area and want in, tweet me.

Tuesday & Wednesday of this week I was at the Business of WordPress conference both as an attendee and a presenter (although all I really did was sit in the Q&A room and chat with folks, but that was fun).

Tuesday I sat in on a walkthrough with the programmer of the MemberWing plugin. It’s a great plugin, still needs a little bit of work for usability on the user side but it’s really easy to use. Probably my choice when I want to set up a membership site.

And Wednesday was the whole shebang. Great talks, great people, lots of contacts. I petered out at around 3:30pm. So I took care of my introverted self who was overloaded, overstimulated and overtired by that point, and went home satisfied with the contacts I made.

Thursday was blissfully full of nothingness.

Today (Friday) I chatted with super-cute Brit illustrator Willie Hewes about a super-sekrit awesome project we’ll be working on together.

It involves monsters. Rawr.

That’s my week in review with links!

So, what’s been tickling your brain cells this week? Leave a link or two in the comments please!

Starred Items: Doing the Unstuck

Fur & Fluff & Fuzz

Remember that post I wrote a while back about my fastest path to cash? Well, it’s working. I officially brought in enough to cover bills this month! Yay me!

Hubs took me out to Five Guys (yummiest burgers & fries ever) to celebrate.

We don’t get out much.

And not only that, because I’ve been taking a class on money matters/fear and dealing with a few big icks lately on top of refocusing on the things that bring in money relatively quickly, things are flowing again. And the next few months are RIPE with possibilities for even more.

One thing that I realized is the moment I decided, the moment I focused, things started falling into place. Clients came back for more work, amazing twitter folk were referring work to me, and biz even started popping in the other places I wasn’t focusing on much.

I’m one busy gal this summer!

Anywho, here’s stuff that’s been blowing my mind this week:

The Tiny Soprano asks Can We Stop Talking About Stuck, Please? Her remedy? Trust. I like that.

A new discovery this week: a site called A Big Creative Yes. And the post that hit me? How To Have Bigger, Better, Bolder and More Beautiful Creative Ideas.

New way to think about productivity in 6 New Productivity Principles to Live By. I especially like #2: Fresh Starts Every Day. Don’t beat yourself up for not doing what you said you’d do the day before. Start every day as if it’s all you have. Anyone who caught my call with Chrissy of Indie Biz Chicks knows the beef I have with the productivity crowd. If you want to listen, you can get a copy of all the audios for the Summer Biz Sessions PLUS worksheets & stuff here using my affiliate link (come on, it’s only $15!).

And lastly, I won (!!) a space in the World Changing Writing Workshop (aka WCWW) this week thanks to the lovely Pace & Kyeli generously running a writing contest. It’s already started, so you can’t get in (boo!) but I’m sure they’ll do something neat like release a home-study version.

And if you’re not too sure where “Doing the Unstuck” comes from, I give you The Cure…

**You may ask yourself, “Why has she used a kitty as the image for this post?” Because everything’s better with kitties. And the Cure. Yep.

Starred Items: You Are Enough

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know that I’m pretty big on creativity. The expression and cultivation of it is intensely interesting, and I read everything I can get my hands on about it. This week’s Starred Items is no different.

I’ve seen a flurry of posts lately on “enoughness” and fighting the thoughts that say you’re not good enough, you’re not doing enough, you’re not living up to your creative potential. It’s kinda serendipitous because I’ve been writing the same kinds of things in my daily writing.

So in the spirit of creativity & being enough, here are my starred items for this week. Have a fantastic weekend!

Befriending the Hounds of More: As a creative person, I know I’m always pursued by a pack of these hounds. They bark “You can do more!” and make you feel like dirt when you’re not doing enough.

Little but Really Useful Guide to Creativity: Funny how we complicate things. Creativity is a natural extension of all of us (yes, you, too) and you just need to nurture it.

Effective Solopreneur: Aligning with Your Natural Creativity Cycles: Even creativity has cycles. Here’s a quick guide on the four stages and how to identify them. Nancy also gives some tips on how this cycle relates to your business.

10 reasons to just do something creative and not care about the result: Sometimes you just need to do something without being pressured to perform or come up with the next huge thing for you or your biz.

Friday Lynx

muskokawildlife 21I’ve been fascinated by big cats since I was a kid. So I’m renaming (at least for this week) my Friday Starred Items to “Friday Lynx.”

Because I feel like it.

It’s been a few weeks since I did this, and I’ve been waffling on my posting schedule (because I’m not one for routine or schedules…).

There are only three this week because I’ve neglected to bookmark the awesomeness I’ve been reading (and because part of my getting sh*t done thing requires I reduce my input… ;) ).

The Lynx!

F*ck Conventional Wisdom: Why do we have to follow what everyone else thinks is “common sense?” I mean, why do I have to pick one thing and stick to it for 20 years? Why do I have to be an employee? Why must I sit quietly and be ladylike?  And the “truth” that all artists will starve and never make a penny? Hmph.

If I’m so Smart, Why Aren’t I Rich? Crystal & I tossed around this question a while back on twitter and she came up with two answers: fear about money & being driven by emotions. And I think she got it right. For me, I think I’ll add in lack of focus and spending too much time on stuff that doesn’t engage my true strengths.

Why You’re Still Stuck Trying To Find Your Life Purpose: Cath Duncan at the newly-renamed Agile Living gives some hope to those of us still trying to find what everyone else calls your true passion. Truth is, you may not have just one, and that’s perfectly OK. I don’t have just one, and it rankles me to hear coaches & productivity folks & career counselors repeat “find your passion” in the singular. That’s such a loaded statement, full of crazy-making urgency that if you don’t find your “one passion” that your life will suck. Cath brings a whole lot of sanity to this whole notion of finding your purpose.

So, what awesomeness has your brain swirling this week? Leave the links in the comments!

Starred Items: Time to get out of hibernation

(233/365) Peek-a-boo-booHow’d you hold up this week?

Me? I did alright.

Wednesday I was challenged to close a sale in 8 minutes. I didn’t, although 3 of my classmates did. But this taught me a valuable lesson: I can’t sell anything without leads. Yes, this is sales-y jargon that used to churn my stomach, too. But I’m in business. And if I don’t have good, solid, qualified leads people interested in what I do, I have no sales.

But I tried. I quickly created a page announcing a special Twitter deal for coaching & announced it to my stream. No takers, but the deal’s still on.

What am I going to do about it?

I’ve been hibernating all winter, barely peeking out my front door to say hi to the mail lady. So I’m going to start getting out of the house more. Start a local meetup for creative entrepreneurs & wannabes. Talk to local arts leagues about quitting the starving artist habit. Hit a craft/art fair a week and talk to artists.

If you’re in business, what have you learned recently? You can leave a comment below if you want.

And since it’s Friday, and I moved my linky posts to Fridays…

Start Clicking!

How to do what you’ve always wanted: Simple, no-nonsense, definitely no woo-woo method to do what you want. Step 1: open it up. Step 2: Make Your Choice. Step 3: Do one thing. And another. And another. As I’m fond of saying: lots of small steps add up to some really awesome stuff.

Where Passion Met Purpose – How The Creative Entrepreneur Propelled My Biz forward: Another fellow creative who found this book life-changing. You will too. I promise (and if you sign up for my “venti” coaching package, this is one of the first 3 books you get!)

Ignore Coaches: (at least when it comes to passion…) I’m going out on a limb here, because coaching/consulting is my newest-chosen profession, but read it anyway. If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know my views on passion. This shows I’m not alone!

Our passions or appetites may be fickle and hard to satisfy; values rarely are.

Becoming a better marketer—Part 3: Part 1 and Part 2 all contain excellent marketing advice (for someone who already has a bit of marketing know-how) but I have to link to this one because Yolanda critiqued the Thrive Creative Coaching site. And Yolanda, I will be adding the things you mentioned in your critique. Promise!

Strategic Planning is for the Birds: Earlier this year I decided to write out a Strategic Plan ala Lisa Sonora Beam. It made me feel awful. Partially because writing out my year in advance felt like shoving me in a painfully small box, and partially because I tend to rebel against any sort of order, even if self-imposed. Thanks for this simplicity, Pam.

And for good measure (the title says it all): Why Affordable Products Hurt You & Your Customers.

Starred Items: So much fun stuff!

This week has been really eventful. Isn’t there some Chinese curse that says “May you live in interesting times?” Well, my time has been like that.

I released my ebook to the wild, had some bartering agreement that went sour and all the emotional turmoil that accompanies feeling it was all my fault and fear that someone now hates me churning in my chest (she probably doesn’t… I have to keep reminding myself that people really don’t think about me as much as I think they do).

Stay tuned for my rant on bartering.

On a brighter note, there was so much linky goodness this week!! I had 9 links in the initial draft for this post, but I had to narrow it down to 5… next week I’ll use the ones I excluded.

The goods:

Breaking out of the scarcity mindset: How to afford anything you want: I heart Dave Navarro. No, not that one. The Rock Your Day one. I could have written a lot more on my bartering post set to go live soon, included this scarcity/poverty mindset piece, but he puts it so nicely I figured I’d prime you, my blog readers, with this.

Oh Squeezy sales pages, how I hate thee! Let me count the ways… This was the original inspiration behind my Flying in the face of convention post. Kelly so eloquently expresses her distaste for “conventional” sales pages—you know the ones where you scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and still need to click a button to find out how much something costs? Yeah. I don’t like them either. She instead recommends being honest, clear, concise, and to quit the BS.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road: How to lead your tribe when you’re a wanderer: I am a wanderer. If you haven’t figured that out already. And I’ve been struggling with all these different parts of me that don’t seem to fit one title/mold/box (not that I want to be shoved into any of those). I’m afraid of being seen as flighty, non-committal, and flaky. But I’m not. So I’m going to take her advice. Stay tuned for some group classes ;) .

Better than an Expert: 7 Things I’d Rather Be: I’d rather be any of the things Ken mentions (friend, explorer, advocate…) than an expert. Experts are regarded highly for their expertise, but it sounds boring to me. All my life focused on knowing everything about one thing? I’d rather be a question mark.

How do I figure out my passion and purpose? If you ask me, passion’s highly overrated. However, it’s a word that means purpose and love and all that wrapped into a big huge thing that everyone uses, so I’ll excuse Cath for using that word. But she does have a great set of exercises that’ll help you figure out what you’re put on this earth to do.

Have you come across any good links this week? Let me know in the comments!

Starred Items. On a Friday.

Sand CatsI haven’t done one of these in a while, and since Friday’s a day for goofing off and pretending you’re working, I may just keep the Starred Items! posts on Fridays.

Why sleeping cats?

Why not? ;)

Here are the goods:

Why You Can Absolutely Do It: I could listen to this guy speak all day… He takes you through a few things that you may think hold you back (education, influence, in-roads & surprsingly, color) and smashes them flat. The Internet is an equalizer. What holds you back is you. So why aren’t you going for it?

The Responsibility of Creativity. Or Why You’re Talented For A Reason: You were gifted (by God, goddess, it, him/her, the universe, evolution…) for a reason. If you don’t use your gifts, you’re depriving yourself and the rest of the world of your particular brand of awesome. And your particular brand of awesome may be inspiring others to express their own awesome. Now how awesome is that? ;)

Eff Cramming (aka in defense of playtime):

If you want more awesome to show up, you have to leave room for it.

I think that says it all.

Everyone Poops (And Sleeps): my favorite copywriter-dude definitely has a way with words. And these words emphasize the importance of not comparing yourself to everyone else.

I firmly believe that what prevents many people from stepping into their greatness and purpose is the fact they compare whatever it is they have done or want to do with EVERYONE who has come before them.

Have a wonderful Friday.

Now go play!

Starred Items: Show up, if it’s all you can do

My energy level has tanked.

But a big part of getting somewhere in life is showing up, right?

So I’m showing up.

I’m dragging, but I’m here.

But I was full of it (energy, that is) last week… and I did something: an ebook called “Five things to do before you kick your day job’s ass to the curb.”

It’s about taking small actions, things that will stir up your inner ninja and preparing yourself for your major leap into a new career or even self-boss-hood.

I have one chapter available – all pretified and stuff – if you sign up for my Thrive Creative Coaching mailing list.

When I actually launch the eBook, people who are on my list will get a special discount code. SO…. want a preview? The free chapter is on Vision. What it is & how to get it & why you need it.

I have a handy sign-up form right there (pretend I’m pointing you to the top of the column on the right).

Enough self-promotion for now. On to the links!

10 Steps to Escaping the Job World and Creating the Life You Really Want. Valerie Young gets to the heart of what it takes.

The Silence of Becoming A Linchpin: Jen’s talking about Seth Godin’s new book, Linchpin – and what it means to actually ship (i.e. get stuff out there).

I have a problem with too many tools… so what do you do to get rid of what you don’t need and streamline your toolbox? Ken Robert’s guest post on Productive Flourishing may help.

An occasional romp into the worst-case scenario may be good for you. Screw positive thinking! Creativity, Motivation, And The Dark Side Of The Future

And for some inspiration… The Change Maker’s Creed:

am changing the world. Lead, follow, help, or get the hell out of the way.

If that doesn’t make you want to unleash your inner ninja… I don’t know what will.

Starred Items – The Ugly Hairy Beetle Edition

Boo! (Or, evolution is awesome)This week I stepped waay back from my strategic plan and tried to figure out a way to make this really work without throwing me headlong into overwhelm.

Which is a relatively easy thing to do…

I haven’t exactly made up with my plan, but we’ve agreed on a truce.

Plan lives on my computer where it’s easily changed.

Plan only gives me the next three months of things to do so I don’t rebel against it like a hormonal teenager.

Laminated Plan is removed from planner. This one was a major sticking point. Plan didn’t quite want to be sent to the shredder so I relegated it to the book shelf tucked inside one of the multitude of journals I have lined up.

Don’t ask me which one because I’ve already forgotten. ( Read more )
